current research interests
My current research interests focus on the interplay of ethical principles and political behaviour.
Political institutions coordinate actors behaviour by a normative frame made of rules of conduct
and ethical principles. Nevertheless, political behaviour is only insufficiently shaped either by
strategic behaviour or by explicit rules like norms and laws. Most of the actions performed in the
sphere of politics rest on assumptions and expectations that belong by and large to the actors’ tacit
knowledge of significant institutional frames. Despite the scepticism of current political theory towards the rhetoric of political ethics, appeals to ethics in political language are to be seen as part of a “grammar”
that constitutes the basic infrastructure of political communication.
After reconstructing a theory of the “tacit ethics” of political institutions, my research aims to
translate this theory into a programme of empirical research on global justice by analysing the concepts of justice in global protest movements.
