Main Objective

Human communication brings together language, cognition, emotions and culture in a complex entanglement. This Research Group has as its main objective to study in detail each of these aspects in an interdisciplinary framework. To do this, the group will take into account the most important developments and results in a variety of disciplines, aiming at a truly innovative contribution to the explanation of communication.

Working Process

1.    Research will be pursued in the following disciplines:
a.    Philosophical Logic;
b.    Philosophy of Language;
c.    Philosophy of Mind;
d.    Philosophy of Neuroscience;
e.    Philosophy of Emotions;
f.    Cognitive Science;
g.    Film Studies

2. The research will involve the confluence of various philosophical approaches, including, but not limited to, the framework identifiable with what came to be called the “Analytic Philosophy”. In each discipline, communication will be approached directly (for instance, the study of the Semantics/Pragmatics distinction in Philosophy of Language) or indirectly (e.g., the study of consciousness). In the latter case, the results will be eventually integrated in the general project of explaining human communication, as stated in the main objectives of this Research Group.

3. The progress of each researcher / research team will be tracked through a continuous interchange of ideas, as well as in formal annual meetings in which the researchers will sum up the development of their projects, their activities and their plans, having in mind their most important results towards explaining human communication.

4. All work will be project-oriented, in the sense that the researchers, gathered in teams, will be developing previously submitted projects either to external or to internal funding, and will be following well-defined courses of action, subject to continuous evaluation, towards the realisation of the specific objectives of each particular project.
