Instituto de Filosofia da Nova - Nova Institute of Philosophy

The Nova Institute of Philosophy (IFILNOVA) is a research unit of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences (FCSH) of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa.

Its main purpose is to develop research programs currently focused on the theme of value construction and negotiation aimed at the application of philosophical theories to social practices and problems. Within such a framework, IFILNOVA has achieved national excellence (it was rated Excellent in the last scientific evaluation developed by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology) and international acknowledgement in areas such as argumentation theory, pragmatics, and history of philosophy (more specifically, studies on Nietzsche and Wittgenstein).

The goal of the institute is pursued at different levels (theoretical development, application, outreach) through three distinct strategies, namely

  1. development and application of new theories to empirical fields;
  2. development of classic theories and their application to other theoretical areas: and
  3. direct intervention into social practices.

The different Laboratories which constitute the institute follow the common goal in different areas of study, each with its specific preferred research strategy.

  • ARGLAB pursues the development and application of philosophical theories in argumentation theory and pragmatics to empirical areas (education, environmental, medical, legal, and political communication),
  • EPLAB pursues the development and application of traditional philosophical approaches to social practices and problems, such as the nature of normativity in ethics and politics.
  • CINELAB pursues the application of philosophical theories to cultural practice, more specifically through work on cinema and philosophy.
  • CULTURELAB pursues the development of traditional philosophical approaches to show the relationships with other theoretical areas such as literature and the arts.
  • The outreach of the theoretical developments and more specifically the intervention on practices crucial for society (such as education, health services, public deliberation, and cultural activities) is pursued by the DISSEMINATION INTERFACE.
